Recovery after a regenerative injection is usually straightforward, but how you spend the first days and weeks can shape your results. This guide covers what is normal, how to protect the treated area, and when to check in with your clinic.
Expect some soreness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. This is a normal part of the inflammatory and healing response. Ice the area as directed, keep the treated joint or limb rested, and avoid strenuous activity. Your clinic will give you specific instructions, including whether to take or avoid certain medications.
One common piece of advice: avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen unless your provider says otherwise, because they may blunt the healing response the treatment is meant to stimulate. Always follow the specific guidance from your own care team.
Regeneration takes time. Improvement, if it comes, typically builds gradually over weeks to months rather than overnight. Some patients notice a temporary flare of discomfort in the treated joint before things settle, which is not unusual. Follow your clinic's plan for resuming activity, and ease back into exercise rather than testing the joint to its limits on day three.
An injection treats the tissue, but movement builds the support system around it. Physical therapy, strength training, and progressive loading are frequently part of a plan that lasts far longer than the single visit. Think of the injection as the start of a season of rehabilitation, not the whole program.
