Is stem cell therapy safe?

P Written by: Phil Kim Medically reviewed by: Dr. Robert Aki, DPM Last medically reviewed: October 9, 2026

Because the cells come from your own body, stem cell therapy avoids the immune risks of donor material, and the procedure is generally well tolerated. As with any injection procedure, there are risks, including soreness, swelling, and infection, which your provider reviews with you before treatment.

The autologous advantage

Using your own cells means there is no risk of immune rejection and no donor-derived material involved. The preparation happens in the clinic under sterile conditions, and the cells are delivered the same day.

Common side effects

Most patients experience some soreness and swelling at the collection and injection sites for a few days. That is a normal part of the healing response, and it typically settles on its own.

Risks to know about

As with any injection, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, or nerve irritation. Your provider reviews your history and medications to reduce these risks and tells you what to watch for after treatment.

Safety starts with evaluation

Safety is not a single answer; it depends on your health, your condition, and the skill of the team. A thorough consultation and honest screening are the first steps, which is exactly how every visit at Aloha Stem Cell begins.
