How are stem cells collected for treatment?

P Written by: Phil Kim Medically reviewed by: Dr. Robert Aki, DPM Last medically reviewed: October 9, 2026

Stem cells are collected from your own body, usually from bone marrow or fat tissue, during a short outpatient procedure at the clinic. The collection site is numbed first, and the sample is small.

Bone marrow collection

Bone marrow is often collected from the back of the pelvis. The area is numbed, a small needle is used to draw the sample, and the procedure takes a short time. Most patients tolerate it well.

Fat tissue collection

Fat tissue is another rich source of adult stem cells. A small amount of fat is collected, usually from the abdomen or hip, through a tiny incision, and the cells are separated from the fat in the clinic.

Preparation and delivery

After collection, the sample is processed in the clinic to concentrate the cells, then delivered back to the area being treated with a guided injection. Everything happens the same day, so the cells are fresh.

What to expect

Expect some soreness at the collection site and the injection site for a few days. Your care team gives you written recovery instructions and a number to call with any concerns: (808) 593-2525.
